You know your job. You know your numbers. This is the English that lets you hold your price, push back politely, and close clearly — in meetings, on calls, and by email.
For non-native professionals B2+ and for MBA / job seekers who want to sound calm, clear, and credible under pressure.
The phrase: Use it instead of jumping straight to a lower number. It tests room to move without making a weak first offer.
Use it like this: “Thanks for the quote. Is there any flexibility on this if we commit to a 12-month term?”
Common mistake: Saying “Can you make it cheaper?” — it sounds vague and invites a flat no. Name what you can give in return.
2-minute drill: Say the line out loud three times, each time with a different trade: longer term, faster payment, larger volume.
Full issues are in the newsletter folder. Every issue follows the same structure: 1 phrase breakdown, 1 full script, 1 mistake + fix, 1 drill.
Self-paced. Each module has outcomes, 10 key phrases with examples, a full dialogue, a worksheet, and a 5-question quiz.
Know your walk-away line, your best alternative, and your opening number — in English you can say calmly.
Open the meeting, set the agenda, and state what success looks like without sounding stiff.
Make offers with conditionals, trade concessions, and anchor without sounding aggressive.
Say no, stall, handle “take it or leave it,” and use silence without panicking.
Recap, lock terms, and write the follow-up email that actually holds.
Salary, vendor price, rent / lease, and partnership split — full scripts you can rehearse.
Other side: “Our price is $48,000 for the full package.”
You: “Thanks for sharing that. I see the value in the package. At $48,000, it is above what we planned for this phase. Is there any flexibility on this if we start with the core scope and add the rest next quarter?”
Other side: “We could look at the core scope for $36,000.”
You: “That is closer. If we agree on $34,000 for the core scope with delivery by June 15, we can move forward this week.”
You: “Thanks for the offer. I am excited about the role. Based on the scope and the market for this level, I was expecting a range closer to $95,000 to $100,000. Is there room to meet in that range?”
Other side: “Our budget is tight at $88,000.”
You: “I understand. If we can agree on $92,000 with a review in six months, I can accept today.”
Other side: “We need it by Friday, no exceptions.”
You: “I hear the urgency. To hit Friday, we would need to cut testing. A safer option is Monday with full testing. Would Monday work, or should we agree on a reduced scope for Friday?”
